Saving money the smart way

One of the few things that I realized soon after I started working is what you earn can always run out if you are not careful. So one has to be cautious and all that. Though nothing beats knowing the right times to buy exactly what you want. SmartMoney.com has a wonderful list [via LifeHacker], that covers some items that we all buy in our day to day life.

Nothing beats getting what you want at a wonderful price.

iTunes 7.0 review

iTunes 7 playlistSo, as I mentioned yesterday, Apple released iTunes 7.0 yesterday, and how they redeemed themselves by letting me install it on my Windows XP Pro x64. iTunes 7 brings in a slew of new features that you can easily find on their site. I’ll just try to cover some of the lovely little details that they are going to forget to mention.

First, the good things. The interface has been changed, even though the basics are still there. Those who said that’s it’s the same yet not and is hard to explain it, obviously fell for Steve’s jabber instead of actually looking at it. The first thing that you see is that everything looks cleaner. Check the play list screen shot on the right; it is now more organized and spaced out to not feel cluttered.

One big thing in 7.0 is the emphasis of cover art. It is just one of those things that Micro$oft is working on bringing to Windows Media Player (WMP) 11. I guess Apple beat them to the punch again. The most amazing thing is that, there is a layout available in iTunes that looks exactly like the one in WMP. I guess Steve’s gonna claim that Redmond stole that one also.

Apple Showtime Announcement: iTunes 7.0

Horray! iTunes 7.0 right after I finally updated to iTunes 6.0.5.20. Thank God that it installs in Windows x64 without any questions (again)! And works too (as always). Now I feel bad for picking on them yesterday. It was just yesterday, can you believe it?

Also the new iPod lines look great! Gotta get me a new shuffle one of these days. I personally didn’t care much for the Video iPod or the iPhone, so not disappointed here!

iTunes 6.0.5.20 running

Some of you may remember me whining about how iTunes 6.0.5.x installer would block x64 systems from installing it. I have asked the question to myself multiple times and eventually came down to them having to troubleshoot people who didn’t know about the x64 GEAR drivers. So instead of adding the x64 GEAR drivers when they detected Windows x64, they decided to just drop the support altogether. Most probably they couldn’t afford to get a computer to run Windows x64.

Well fortunate for me, I have found a workaround thanx to PlatnetAMD64 forums. Someone if the forums have found out that you can follow the following simple steps and have 6.0.5.x running. Unfortunately, you need access to a machine with 32-bit Windows.

  1. Make sure you have a previous version of iTunes 6.0.x installed on your Windows x64
  2. Install iTunes 6.0.5.x to a machine running 32-bit Windows.
  3. Copy all files in 32-bit Windows machine’s Program Files\iTunes to your Windows x64 machine’s Program Files (x86)\iTunes.
  4. Done.

I did say run iTunes and not install iTunes, you know. The installer still blocks it, even in compatibility mode.
