I haven't talked to him for more than 5 years or ever since we graduated from HS. The spontaneity of his IM surprised me. We had a catch up conversation and then we talked about the good old days when we pwned other schools in math league. It was a fantastic talk that brought back some nostalgia. I think there are many people who are just sitting there, waiting to be called or IMed or e-mailed. They are the people who have been on my IM list and address book for years. Yet, I am too afraid to initiate a conversation because I haven't talked to them for ages. It's a catch 22 situation where someone has to build up some courage for the initial bootstrapping. I have done a few bootstrapping (and I'm not talking about computers) since the surprise IM I got. Believe me, most of them were bloody dying to hear back from me.
